The Anniversary Gift

“Can you believe it?” he suddenly spoke up excitedly, “10th Wedding Anniversary. Wow!”

She appeared to be in a more maudlin mood, as she replied, “I really appreciate you planning this thing. Coming back to the place where we first met and fall in love….Who would have guessed that you would turn out to be a sucker for grand sentimental gestures?”

He rowed on in silence for some time, and then remarked softly, “Do you think it would still be there on the island?”

“The garden? I sure hope so dear,” she replied with a sigh.

“No,” he said with a far-away look in his eyes, “I meant the blue rose bush under which we….”

Her face turned red as she remembered the night, and she completed his sentence, “….buried that body?”

“Yes. It would have been their 10th anniversary today too, so I just thought they deserved to be together today, just like us,” he replied, looking down at the dead wife of their first victim as a team.

    Wow, this could have been longer! I had to read it twice because I keep seeing a child in the picture and that changes the context completely.
