It was the penultimate day of our vacation, and I wanted to gift her something special to remember it by. I thought long, and I thought hard…
But nothing came to me.
I kept thinking as we waited for our flight from Madeira to Lisbon,
and then over a drink of homemade Ginja, or cherry liqueur
And just as I took my last sip of the heavenly drink, the idea struck me like a hammer. I knew what she would love the most.
“Let’s go to the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center,” I told her, “we’ll buy some stuff for taking back with us.”
Since we had nothing more exciting planned for the day, she readily agreed, and the first step in my plan was successfully executed.
We reached the ship-shaped shopping center late in the afternoon
and immediately started making the rounds of the usual suspects in terms of the stores. But I could see that she was getting tired now, and I needed to spring my surprise soon for her to be able to appreciate it.
“Can we go to the hypermarket for a minute?” I asked, “I just need to pick up a toothpaste.”
Once inside, we traversed a mile-long distance to a corner, where I told her to wait for me, as I left to get the toothpaste, and disappeared.
As she waited for me to return, she started getting impatient. Being stuck in a mall was not her idea of spending a glorious day abroad. And then, while tapping her feet restlessly, she lazily turned around, and saw where she was standing… and promptly forgot all about me.
It was a wall full of pasta of all kinds- Spaghetti, Penne, Fusilli, Tagliatelle, Rigatoni, Farfalle…in different colors, and sizes… and she felt as if she was in heaven.
The best gift is the perfect one for that person. Doesn’t have to cost a lot, just come with love.
Couldn’t agree more with you Sarah 🙂
