The Heat Is On

Sher Khan was extremely grumpy for want of sleep

As his cave’s AC conked off, just as he reached the 34th sheep

The sleep that counting sheep gave him was anyways never deep

But then, such luxuries seldom came cheap

Tossing & turning, he remembered the nights past

When it was 45 degrees outside, but the AC was on at full blast

The entire forest thought of him as an iconoclast

But it also left a lot of animals aghast

For a lion is the king of the jungle, a lot of them thought (but never aloud)

And needed to set an example by looking suitably regal and proud

Only then in his footsteps would follow the crowd

Like a rainbow always follows a cloud

But Sher Khan couldn’t care two hoots about this perception

For his aversion to heat was not a result of his own selection

He blamed his genes for this predilection

And told everyone-This is out of necessity, not my duty’s dereliction

But now, coming back from the mandatory flashback

Sher Khan felt that without the AC, he would melt, wilt or crack

So he picked up his iPhone and called Repairman Jack

And asked him to immediately bring his AC on the right track

Jack was sleepy, so did not realize who was calling

And so he said- It is very late, the heavens are not falling

Calling someone at this unearthly hour, By God, it is galling

Sher Khan growled- Saara sheher mujhe LOIN ke naam se jaanta hai, are you really looking for a mauling?

Jack finally realized that the caller was Sher Khan

He started quivering on his feet, and lost all his élan

He was out of his home and at the cave, in only his pyjamas and baniyaan

For no one wants to be eaten alive, that too without pyaaz, pickle or butter naan

Lo and behold, the AC was repaired, and Jack had gone

But Sher Khan’s memory foam mattress felt stiff as a stone

For the cave was now filled with the AC’s mechanical drone

And that woke up the 100 sheep in his cave, and they kept bleating on and on and on…
